His death has left family, friends, players, and colleagues heartbroken, as they remember a man whose life was defined by passion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to developing young athletes both on and off the ice.
Steve Lanzo was widely admired as more than just a coach—he was a mentor who shaped character, built confidence, and inspired discipline in countless players over the years. A proud alumnus of Montclair High School, his connection to hockey began early and grew into a lifelong devotion. He dedicated decades of his life to the sport, pouring his energy into nurturing young athletes and strengthening the hockey community he loved.
As a longtime coach and board member of the Montclair Hockey Club, Steve played a vital role in developing the program and guiding generations of players. He was deeply involved in coaching youth teams from the early 2000s onward, including teams his son Blake played on, from Mites through Bantams. His influence extended far beyond strategy and skill development—he was known for teaching perseverance, teamwork, and respect.
Steve also served as head coach of the men’s hockey team at Montclair State University, where his leadership continued to leave a lasting impact. Players remember him for his steady guidance, his integrity, and his ability to motivate others to reach their full potential. His coaching legacy is reflected not only in wins and achievements, but in the confidence and character of the athletes he mentored.
